The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team is likely designing a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might find an answer because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
