This Satirical Thriller

Director Coralie Fargeat's daring commentary tackles the demanding standards for women's appearance along with the dreaded aspects of growing older. Demi Moore presents a brilliant acting turn playing Elisabeth, a mature film star forced into starring in an aerobics show on TV. Forced aside by her deceitful superior Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out an enigmatic and gruesome process known as "The Substance". The Woman in Cabin 10

This suspenseful thriller includes Knightley as Laura, an ace reporter who opts for some time off from writing about global conflict to join a high-end voyage alongside an ailing Scandinavian billionaire and philanthropist, her partner, plus additional extremely wealthy individuals. But after an unknown lady goes overboard overnight and everyone insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Streaming currently, Netflix

Presence

Soderbergh pushes his creative boundaries with this innovative paranormal narrative shot entirely from the perspective of a ghost. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the camera – as the unseen entity – tracks their movements. The daughter appears conscious of the poltergeist, and it seems guarding her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist you might not see coming. This Saturday, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere

This Self-Referential Film

Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame in this meta comedy caper. He portrays an egotistical film star named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a million-dollar gig to attend a celebration at a Mediterranean location for the wealthy Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by the CIA to gather intel on the alleged criminal, his unconventional method is put to the test. This Saturday, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone

Derrickson's contained scarefest remains effective without requiring a follow-up. Located in the late 70s in Denver, several disappearances has rendered the children frightened. When Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and held captive in a basement, he dreads a fatal end. However, the old telephone mounted nearby continues to ring, with ghostly voices giving advice, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, on Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for Mammon in this director's delightfully tacky biopic about the fallen televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor acts as the venal Jim, who states initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals commence profiting from the nation's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, yet Chastain achieves to depict Tammy Faye with compassion. Tuesday 14 October, late night, the Film4 channel

The Spy Mystery

This week's additional entry from the filmmaker presents a spy mystery as precise as the polo necks used by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. He receives a mission to identify a mole among the team from a group of five – among them is his own wife. Both actors are masters of understated style, so a delicious mental battle of fact versus fiction develops. The supporting cast join in the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
